Yeah, that &#8217, s a somewhat clickbait-y subject, but these are terrible times. Colleges are cutting programs, scaling manner up and in some serious instances, closing immediately. It’s difficult to get a whole week without hearing a story about the looming end of higher education.

Is higher ed dying? No, I don&#8217, t think thus. Is it ill? Yes, I believe thus.

Recently, I came across a news article about the absence of university degrees for employees at large companies like Google, Apple, and Netflix. I was struck by this statement:

Tim Cook, the CEO of Apple, recently claimed that about half of the company’s US workforce last year was made up of people without four-year levels. Cook argued that many schools do not impart the skills that business leaders require most, such as programming.

That&#8217, s worrying, but hardly shocking. It&#8217, s challenging to rapidly pivot at businesses as big as a school. Apple may choose to stop producing X monday and switch to Y. This is much more difficult to do for us.

As we go through the college search process with our oldest kid, I’ve been thinking about this a bit since. I’ve been paying attention to the outcomes, the price, and the experience my son may have like never before. What will the practice be like for my younger brother five years after that? Hope to read a lot of posts about my experiences with this research method in the upcoming months. I’m aware of how bacon is made, so I’ve been both amazed and completely shocked by how some schools approach potential students. That&#8217, s a ( series of ) post ( s ) for another day.

I watched this video last week, and while I disagree with some of the things Patrick Bet-David is saying, some of them make a lot of sense, especially the passages about speed, memory, and tech changing so quickly that some programs are out of time before they even begin.
