In the mid-1990s, Johnny Cage was the epitome of cool to a certain period of movie-watchers, whether it was the$ 500 shades, the bravado, or the one-liners. This viewer was of a specific and discerning variety too, the kind who was old enough to have played Mortal Kombat II]… ]
The second post Mortal Kombat II Video Confirms a Truth: Johnny Cage Is the Best from the 90s never came up again.
Every time a new period of a big tentpole scientific literature rolls around, viewers and critics tend to try to find the reason why this time things are different. A new put part or a shake-up in the creative team is frequently mentioned in new seasons as having the power to change anything. But despite the two-year delay, the pleasant thing about Star Trek: Odd New Worlds Season 3 is that it’s basically the same present it’s been since 2022. The edict for season 3 is very clear to the cast and showrunners of the hugely popular Paramount + series: If ain’t broken, don’t bring in Scotty to fix it.
” I think it’s the continuity of keeping it a different story, a unique style. Celia Rose Gooding, the sun, claims that “every show we’re keeping it classic.” ” It’, s a strange new world every season, and I think that ’, s what keeps viewers coming back”.
What kinds of unusual new worlds is fans anticipate in a second season, though? And is the key to this show’s victory just found in its homage feelings or is there something deeper? We spoke with solid individuals Anson Mount, Carol Kane, Ethan Peck, Babs Olusanmokun, and screenwriters Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers in addition to Gooding, to discuss the potential for the Final Frontier.  ,
It’s Been a Long Road ,
Although Star Trek: Strange New Worlds seems, in some ways, to be a fairly new series ( it launched in 2022 ), for Anson Mount and Ethan Peck, this mission has been going on for nearly a decade, beginning when they first took on the roles of Captain Pike and Mr. Spock in Star Trek: Discovery Season 2 seven years ago.
Peck recalls playing Spock since 2019 that” a lot of pain that kind of turned into convenience over time.” ” And there are times when I’, m on fixed and I’, m not sure if I’, m being Spock enough or if I’, m being Ethan. And I’, m like,” Where, s the range?” We spend so many time as these heroes, and that series gets a little vague”.
Pike’s transformation from a TOS trivia question to the precious lead in Strange New Worlds has also been a personal journey for Mount. And it’s fused him completely to Pike.
” For whatever reason, this figure is close to me than a lot of different characters that I have played,” Mount says. ” But I think the entire tone of our present is a bit different]from Discovery]. We made the decision to downplay the enthusiasm in Trek and the planet-of-the-week, and Pike had to learn that the trip was the trip.
A Weird, New Serialization ,
Strange New Worlds ‘ popularity isn’t actually due to its homage to the self-contained character of the classic Star Trek show, even though it has a reputation for doing so in the style and format of The Original Series. Rather like many other modern TV shows, Weird New Worlds does have a syndicated design to it. However, those loops are not just related to the scientific literature tales. In Odd New Worlds, the serial is the figures.  ,
” There are certain types of relationship reports you can simply tell over day”, co-showrunner Goldsman says. But when we discuss this published character arc capable of the display, we’re doing anything The Original Series don’t.
Goldsman brings up the traditional TOS season” The City on the Edge of Forever” as the ultimate example of not only a great show of Trek but also how it ’, s expressive of the limitations of the classic line. From 1966 to 1969, we got to know the TOS solid quite well, but it turns out that the characters didn’t have perfect arcs.
” Little frustrated me more than Kirk losing Edith Keeler one year and being good the following week”, Goldsman considers. However, we can actually talk about relationships having roots, middles, and ends on our present. They couldn’, t. So they were kind of trapped in limbo in a peculiar manner. However, we are not.
One great example of how this kind of personality development unfolds in year 3 is the conversion of Gooding’s take on Nyota Uhura. She’s had much more development with her younger Uhura than Nichelle Nichols ever did on The Original Series, to mention Zoe Salda’s Uhura in the reboot movies, thanks to Strange New Worlds ‘ character-driven episodic arcs. As iconic as the two previous Uhuras are, Gooding’s is the one we’ve gotten to know the best. In fact, the journey of her modest Uhura will begin to fully develop into the more ebullient Uhura of The Original Series in the upcoming season 3.
” I think with season 3, we’re now getting an opportunity to show her more playful, flirtatious side”, Gooding says. She had a lot of history, trauma, and depth in her previous seasons. Now we get to see how she can still find lightness, joy, and playfulness. It very closely resembles the Lieutenant Uhura from TOS. That’s a change from what we’ve seen of her in previous seasons”.
Dr.M’Benga as played by Babs Olusanmokun is on the other side of the Starfleet biographical coin. A minor character who appeared in just two TOS episodes ( as played by Booker Bradshaw ), Olusanmokun’s take on the man has been one of pure invention rather than reinvention. Canon hardly matters when it comes toM’Benga. The character was basically a blank slate. In season 2, we discovered a more physical, action-adventure version ofM’Benga, a trait Olusanmokun ensures will continue in season 3. In contrast, he started out as a sympathetic doctor with a mysterious past in Strange New Worlds ‘ first season.
” ’, There are other pieces of him that we’re still unraveling”, Olusanmokun says. ” But, yes, we leaned into that for season 2, and there’s more of that in season three.”
For those who remember Olusanmokun in both Dune: Part One and Dune: Part Two, where he played the Fremen Jamis, the actor has the ability to bring equal parts warrior and monk to certain roles, something that is on full display forM’Benga in Strange New Worlds Season 3. However, is this person the most risky physician in Star Trek history? Could this badass take Dr. Bashir or Bones in a fight? Only speaking as though those who know what they do don’t talk about what they do, or glorify what they do, Olusanmokun makes an hints at a connection between himself and the quiet strength ofM’Benga. They just do it”.
Keeping Things Light ,
Despite the franchise’s reputation for self-seriousness and social commentary about the nature of humanity, the Star Trek phenomenon would be nothing without humor. And it’s precisely at this point that Strange New Worlds Season 3 excels: it adds fun to the Final Frontier without completely turning the show into a sitcom ( though one episode this season might qualify as a rom-com! ). But this humorous element couldn’, t work without certain characters. The producers asked Carol Kane to play the semi-immortal Pelia, a chief engineer with the irascibility of Bones and a sweetness of her own, so they enlisted the legendary Carol Kane to be on the crew for the second season.
And no, we haven’t confused her with singer Carol King. Kane jokes,” They thought I wrote the Tapestry album.” ” This is the first time I’m breaking it to them. ” Do you still love me?”
One thing that is new for Kane in season 3 is her pairing with Pelia’s old student, Montgomery Scott, better known to legions of fans as Scotty. Scotty was formerly Martin Quinn’s backup in the season 2 finale, and she is now a full member of the cast for season 3.
” Oh, I love him. He is simply adorable. He’, s so fun”, Kane gushes. She also claims that she benefits from the rest of the crew’s company, which resonates both on screen and in real life.
” I was very moved by how I was accepted just right off the bat”, the performer explains. ” My first scene was with Ethan, who graciously accepted me. My instinct is to just try and dive into the writing and fulfill it as much with commitment and energy as I can, and that ’, s how she came out. I believe they created a lovely character for me, and I’m very grateful.
There’s also an episode this season directed by Jonathan Frakes, which Peck, Gooding, and Mount all say is “very funny”. Gooding also reveals that Frakes teased some of the scenes from that upcoming episode. ” Whenever Jonathan Frakes gets on set as a director, I feel so much more liberty to try new stuff and do fun things … it’s really, really fun”.
Mount agrees, jokingly and exclaiming,” Jonathan loves to be on set because he’s a fucking actor.” But relative to the process of comedy, Mount says the environment of the Strange New Worlds set often encourages humorous creativity. occasionally on the go. ” Comedy happens when you find it”, he says. And so you keep kind of changing things just to see if you can find something new.
Beyond the Five-Year Mission ,
Every Strange New Worlds episode begins with Captain Pike repeating Captain Kirk’s well-known words, telling us that this is a “five-year mission” of the USS Enterprise. Just before we sat down with the cast and creative team of the show, it was revealed that this time limit is somewhat literal. Strange New Worlds will wrap up after its fifth season, which will likely be released sometime in 2027, like two other contemporary Paramount + Trek shows, Lower Decks and Discovery. And while this suggests a kind of endpoint for the series, there are still three whole seasons of the show that fans haven’t seen yet.
Co-showrunner Henry Alonso Myers says,” I don’t feel like we’re doing the same thing every season.” ” Without getting into specifics, there are some things in season 4 that people do that we have not seen those characters do. Every day is similar.
Both Myers and Goldsman insist that the season 3—and season 4 and season 5—of Strange New Worlds will continue to deliver on what the promise of the series was originally, to make a version of The Original Series that could exist in today’s culture. However, Goldsman acknowledges that on some level, the show is a bit like the various novels and comics based on the TOS cast, some of which satiated fans ‘ hunger when there was no Star Trek on TV back in the 1970s and early 1980s. Because of this, Strange New Worlds uses classic characters who have been around for almost 60 years. This isn’t fan fiction, exactly, but rather, a kind of expanded universe of The Original Series, previously only found in books and comics.
” I’m thinking about the books, and it’s a good comparison.” I’ve never thought of it, but that’s very much what we are”, Goldsman says. We’re back in the saddle, canon. We’re beyond what is apparent” . ,
What will happen next, then, excluding the next three years of Strange New Worlds adventures? Could Strange New Worlds morph into a reboot of The Original Series, at least for a little while? Goldsman isn’t saying yes, but he’s not saying no either.
” Our plan, our aspiration has always been to get to TOS“, he says. The intention was to transition from the Strange New Worlds cast and crew to a TOS show in five years. Whether we do or don’t, that’s the hope”.
On July 17th, Paramount + will air the third season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.
