    User Research Is Storytelling

I’ve been fascinated by shows since I was a child. I loved the heroes and the excitement—but most of all the reports. I aspired to be an artist. And I believed that I’d get to do the things that Indiana Jones did and go on interesting activities. Yet my friends and I had movie ideas to make and sun in. But they never went any farther. However, I did end up working in user experience ( UI). Today, I realize that there’s an element of drama to UX— I hadn’t actually considered it before, but consumer research is story. And to get the most out of customer studies, you must tell a compelling story that involves stakeholders, including the product team and decision-makers, and piques their interest in learning more.

Think of your favourite film. It more than likely follows a three-act construction that’s frequently seen in movies: the installation, the conflict, and the resolution. The second act shows what exists now, and it helps you get to know the characters and the challenges and problems that they face. The issue begins in Act 2, which introduces the issue. Here, difficulties grow or get worse. And the solution is the third and final work. This is where the issues are resolved and the figures learn and change. This structure, in my opinion, is also a fantastic way to think about customer research, and it might be particularly useful for explaining user research to others.

Use story as a framework when conducting analysis.

It’s sad to say, but many have come to see studies as being dispensable. Research is frequently one of the first things to go when expenses or deadlines are tight. Instead of investing in study, some goods professionals rely on manufacturers or—worse—their personal judgment to make the “right” options for users based on their experience or accepted best practices. That might lead to some clubs getting in the way, but it’s too easy to overlook the real issues facing users. To be user-centered, this is something we really avoid. Design is enhanced by customer research. It keeps it on trail, pointing to problems and opportunities. Being aware of problems with your goods and taking corrective actions can help you keep ahead of your competition.

In the three-act structure, each action corresponds to a part of the process, and each part is important to telling the whole story. Let’s examine the various functions and how they relate to consumer analysis.

    Act one: layout

Fundamental analysis comes in handy because the setup is all about comprehending the background. Basic research ( also called conceptual, discovery, or preliminary research ) helps you understand people and identify their problems. You’re learning about the problems people face now, what options are available, and how those challenges impact them, just like in the films. To do basic research, you may conduct cultural inquiries or journal studies ( or both! ), which may assist you in identifying both problems and opportunities. It doesn’t need to get a great investment in time or money.

Erika Hall writes about the most effective anthropology, which can be as straightforward as spending 15 hours with a customer and asking them to” Walk me through your morning yesterday.” That’s it. Give that one demand. Opened up and listen to them for 15 days. Do everything in your power to protect both your objectives and yourself. Bam, you’re doing ethnography”. Hall predicts that “[This ] will definitely prove quite fascinating. In the very unlikely event that you didn’t learn anything new or helpful, carry on with increased confidence in your way”.

This makes perfect sense to me. And I love that this makes consumer studies so visible. You don’t need to make a lot of paperwork; you can only attract people and do it! This can offer a wealth of knowledge about your customers, and it’ll help you better understand them and what’s going on in their life. That’s what work one is really all about: understanding where people are coming from.

Maybe Spool talks about the importance of basic research and how it may type the bulk of your research. If you can supplement what you’ve heard in the fundamental studies by using any more user data that you can obtain, such as surveys or analytics, to make recommendations that may need to be investigated further, you might as well use those that can be drawn from those that you can obtain. Together, all this information creates a clearer picture of the state of things and all its deficiencies. And that’s the start of a gripping tale. It’s the place in the story where you realize that the principal characters—or the people in this case—are facing issues that they need to conquer. This is where you begin to develop compassion for the figures and support their success, much like in the movies. And finally partners are now doing the same. Their business may lose money because users didn’t finish particular tasks, which may be their love. Or probably they do connect with people ‘ problems. In either case, action one serves as your main strategy for piqueing interest and investment from the participants.

When partners begin to understand the value of basic research, that is open doors to more opportunities that involve users in the decision-making approach. And that can help item team become more user-centric. This gains everyone—users, the goods, and partners. It’s similar to winning an Oscar for a film; it frequently results in a favorable reception and success for your item. And this can be an opportunity for participants to repeat this process with different items. The secret to this approach is storytelling, and knowing how to tell a compelling story is the only way to entice partners to do more research.

This brings us to work two, where you incrementally examine a design or idea to see whether it addresses the problems.

    Act two: fight

Act two is all about digging deeper into the issues that you identified in operate one. This typically involves conducting vertical research, such as accessibility tests, where you evaluate a potential solution ( such as a design ) to see if it addresses the problems you identified. The issues may contain unmet needs or problems with a circulation or procedure that’s tripping users away. Additional problems will arise in the course of work two of a film. It’s here that you learn more about the figures as they grow and develop through this work.

Usability tests should generally consist of five participants, according to Jakob Nielsen, who found that that number of users can usually identify the majority of the issues:” As you add more and more users, you learn less and less because you will keep seeing the same things again and again… After the second user, you are wasting your time by observing the same findings regularly but hardly learning much new.”

There are parallels with storytelling here too, if you try to tell a story with too many characters, the plot may get lost. With fewer participants, each user’s struggles will be more memorable and accessible to other stakeholders when presenting the research. This can help convey the issues that need to be addressed while also highlighting the value of doing the research in the first place.

Usability tests have been conducted in person for tens of thousands of years, but remote testing can also be done using software like Microsoft Teams, Zoom, or other teleconferencing tools. This approach has become increasingly popular since the beginning of the pandemic, and it works well. You might consider in-person usability tests like attending a play and remote sessions as more of a movie watching experience. There are advantages and disadvantages to each. Usability research in person is a much more extensive experience. Stakeholders can experience the sessions with other stakeholders. Additionally, you’ll also hear their reactions in real-time, including surprises, disagreements, and discussions of what they’re seeing. Much like going to a play, where audiences get to take in the stage, the costumes, the lighting, and the actors ‘ interactions, in-person research lets you see users up close, including their body language, how they interact with the moderator, and how the scene is set up.

If conducting usability testing in the field is like watching a play that is staged and controlled, where any two sessions may be very different from one another. You can take usability testing into the field by creating a replica of the space where users interact with the product and then conduct your research there. Or you can conduct your research by meeting users at their locations. With either option, you get to see how things work in context, things come up that wouldn’t have in a lab environment—and conversion can shift in entirely different directions. You have less control over how these sessions end as researchers, but this can occasionally help you understand users even better. Meeting users where they are can provide clues to the external forces that could be affecting how they use your product. In-person usability tests add a level of detail that remote usability tests frequently lack.

That’s not to say that the “movies” —remote sessions—aren’t a good option. A wider audience can be obtained from remote sessions. They allow a lot more stakeholders to be involved in the research and to see what’s going on. And they make access to a much wider range of users in their own country. But with any remote session there is the potential of time wasted if participants can’t log in or get their microphone working.

You can ask real users questions to understand their thoughts and understanding of the solution as a result of usability testing, whether it is conducted remotely or in person. This can help you not only identify problems but also glean why they’re problems in the first place. You can also test your own ideas and determine whether they are true. By the end of the sessions, you’ll have a much clearer picture of how usable the designs are and whether they work for their intended purposes. The excitement is in the second act, but there are also potential surprises in the third. This is equally true of usability tests. Unexpected things that are said by participants frequently alter how you view things, and these unexpected developments in the story can lead to unexpected turns in your perception.

Unfortunately, user research is sometimes seen as expendable. Usability testing is also frequently the only research technique that some stakeholders believe they ever need, and too frequently. In fact, if the designs that you’re evaluating in the usability test aren’t grounded in a solid understanding of your users ( foundational research ), there’s not much to be gained by doing usability testing in the first place. That’s because you’re narrowing down the area of focus on without considering the needs of the users. As a result, there’s no way of knowing whether the designs might solve a problem that users have. In the context of a usability test, it’s just feedback on a particular design.

On the other hand, if you only do foundational research, while you might have set out to solve the right problem, you won’t know whether the thing that you’re building will actually solve that. This demonstrates the value of conducting both directional and foundational research.

In act two, stakeholders will—hopefully—get to watch the story unfold in the user sessions, which creates the conflict and tension in the current design by surfacing their highs and lows. And in turn, this can encourage stakeholders to take action on the issues that arise.

    Act three: resolution

The third act is about resolving the issues from the first two acts, whereas the first two acts are about understanding the context and the tensions that can compel stakeholders to act. While it’s important to have an audience for the first two acts, it’s crucial that they stick around for the final act. That includes all members of the product team, including developers, UX experts, business analysts, delivery managers, product managers, and any other parties who have a say in the coming development. It allows the whole team to hear users ‘ feedback together, ask questions, and discuss what’s possible within the project’s constraints. Additionally, it enables the UX design and research teams to clarify, suggest alternatives, or provide more context for their choices. So you can get everyone on the same page and get agreement on the way forward.

Voiceover narration of this act is typically used with audience input. The researcher is the narrator, who paints a picture of the issues and what the future of the product could look like given the things that the team has learned. They provide the stakeholders with their suggestions and suggestions for how to create this vision.

Nancy Duarte in the Harvard Business Review offers an approach to structuring presentations that follow a persuasive story. The most effective presenters” set up a conflict that needs to be resolved” using the same methods as great storytellers, Duarte writes. ” That tension helps them persuade the audience to adopt a new mindset or behave differently”.

This type of structure aligns well with research results, and particularly results from usability tests. It provides proof for “what is “—the issues you’ve identified. And “what could be “—your recommendations on how to address them. And so forth and forth.

You can reinforce your recommendations with examples of things that competitors are doing that could address these issues or with examples where competitors are gaining an edge. Or they can be visual, like quick sketches of how a new design could look that solves a problem. These can help generate conversation and momentum. And this continues until the session is over, when you’ve concluded by bridging the gaps and offering suggestions for improvement. This is the part where you reiterate the main themes or problems and what they mean for the product—the denouement of the story. This stage provides stakeholders with the next steps, and hopefully, the motivation to take those steps as well!

While we are nearly at the end of this story, let’s reflect on the idea that user research is storytelling. The three-act structure of user research contains all the components of a good story:

Act one: You meet the protagonists ( the users ) and the antagonists ( the problems affecting users ). The plot begins here. In act one, researchers might use methods including contextual inquiry, ethnography, diary studies, surveys, and analytics. These techniques can produce personas, empathy maps, user journeys, and analytics dashboards as output.
Act two: Next, there’s character development. The protagonists encounter problems and challenges, which they must overcome, and there is conflict and tension. In act two, researchers might use methods including usability testing, competitive benchmarking, and heuristics evaluation. Usability findings reports, UX strategy documents, usability guidelines, and best practices can be included in the output of these.
Act three: The protagonists triumph and you see what a better future looks like. Researchers may use techniques like storytelling, presentation decks, and digital media in act three. The output of these can be: presentation decks, video clips, audio clips, and pictures.

The researcher plays a variety of roles, including producer, director, and storyteller. The participants have a small role, but they are significant characters ( in the research ). And the audience is the audience, as well. But the most important thing is to get the story right and to use storytelling to tell users ‘ stories through research. By the end, the parties should have a goal and a desire to solve the product’s flaws.

So the next time that you’re planning research with clients or you’re speaking to stakeholders about research that you’ve done, think about how you can weave in some storytelling. In the end, user research is beneficial to everyone, and all parties must be interested in the conclusion.

    • Research is still alive, but visibility is still important, not only rankings. Think: where are you seen when buyers are searching, asking, or being referred?
    • Check your presence in Google’s AI overviews: Look through your major product, service, and brand questions to see if your company is mentioned.
    • Check your local bottle presence: Are you appearing in Google Maps results for relevant native requests?
    • Reviews on Google ( and prospects ) are based on review volume, freshness, and sentiment; this is especially true for Yelp, Yelp, and other industry websites.
    • Media mentions and power: Are you being cited by credible sources, business publications, or native advertising? These use both search engines and AI models to exert authority.
    • E-E-A-T ( Experience, Expertise, Authority, Trust ): Are you demonstrating real proof on your website ( bios, testimonials, transparent pricing, case studies, original research, schema markup )?
    • A boost your chances of appearing in AI and answer engines by using step-by-step guides, FAQs, tables of contents, short answers, and conversational Q&amp.
    • Add CTAs everywhere: Make sure every key page and content section has clear calls to action—don’t make people hunt for how to contact, call, or buy.
    • Use tools and checklists like Gumshoe. ai and a structured audit checklist will help you track and improve your visibility across all touchpoints.

    John Jantsch ( 00: 01.154 )

Hello and welcome to another episode of the duct tape marketing podcast. This is John Jantsch, and we are not guests today. I’m going to do a solo show. In fact, I’m going to host a few shows on the broad topic of SEO, which, depending on who you talk to right now, are either dead or have at least a new name. And so I’m going to add to that conversation. SEO is unquestionably alive. However, I’m going to add to that conversation that I think we need to think about it differently. More of a question is raised.

visibility. That’s what we’re really trying to achieve, not so much ranking, for our clients. It’s visibility in a lot of the different ways that people are choosing to find their answers. People are obviously using AI tools, and Google and other search engines are displaying AI solutions to them. So there’s no question that that is become a part of the game that we have to pay attention to, but not at the absence of many of the other things. People still make recommendations, after all. make her

many different businesses receive referrals. They are definitely going to Google, looking in that map pack and they’re looking at your reviews. So there are many factors that determine whether someone will accompany you on that journey. Obviously, one of the steps is about being seen and found, but it’s a lot more, it goes a lot deeper than just that element. So I want to talk about conducting a visibility audit today. I’m going to give you the elements that I think are important and talk a little bit about.

how you might approach them and how you might approach them as well. And then we’ll have a checklist in the show notes for this. So, you can also get that checklist if you want to visit Duct Tape Marketing, the podcast, and listen to the show and visibility audit. So let’s get into the steps in there. Your brand is showing up, then, right?

in Google’s AI overview. It’s really easy. Go to Google and search the top service products, questions in Google that are related to your company, your industry, your brand, and see if you get cited in any of those. If you and you do have the checklist, you can now give that a score as we go through them. Do a dozen or so searches and one to five. How did you fare?

    John Jantsch ( 02: 25.902 )

There is a tool out there that I’ve been using that I’ll share with you. called Gumshoe. ai. And it will really give you, I think, some, you can run a report and get the very detailed information about where you show up in AI. Okay, to the next one, which is obviously extremely important for local businesses and that is your local pack presence. So on the maps, when somebody searches and it’s clearly a…

a search type based on location. mean, sometimes people actually put a town in there, but even if they don’t, if they’re looking for something in a town, you Google knows where they are. Do searches for your exact keyword, your business, your industry, your goods and services, your brand. And do you appear in the Google map pack? So, you’re aware that if you happen to be in that town, you can perform your service there. Checklisting star reviews.

you are aware of optimization, not just for yourself, but for your competitors. What are they doing? Okay, now. Speaking of reviews, volume, freshness, sentiment, all really count. Google doesn’t care if you’ve received 100 reviews in one day and then haven’t received any for three years. So are your reviews strong and recent enough to inspire trust? since it’s more than just Google. It’s the, know, if you go somewhere and nobody’s reviewed a business for four years, doesn’t that make you a little…

suspicious, no? So go to Google business profile, of course, but also today, you know, I used to kind of be negative on Yelp and I’m still not a huge fan of Yelp. However, more and more of those reviews are being drawn in by AI. So we need to look at all the industry review sites, look at the count rating recency responses. This can also apply to your competitors, once more.

Media mentions and authority, a big, big part of the game and showing up today is really about authority and most media sites, like it or not, are seen as authority. So, if you are quoted in a local newspaper or a Wall Street Journal article and they link back to your website, even if they mention your business but don’t link back to your website.

    John Jantsch ( 04: 44.686 )

If the Wall Street Journal mentioned you, you must know something, so is your business being cited in any trustworthy sources or sources? All the crawlers are now picking that kind of information up and really assigning a lot of authority. I should say beyond your own website You can look in Google News You can do podcast searches you can use tools like refs or SM some rush

You know, tools like those to look up references to your brand mentions, backlinks, and references. And again, right now all we’re doing is auditing. These are the essential parts. Once you have a sense of, or a sense of dread, or a sense of where you stand, these, then we can start talking about how to fix them. Okay, now. You’ve probably heard people talk about this acronym EAT, E-E-A-T. So it refers to experience.

expertise, authority, and trust. It’s essentially argument, particularly on your website. So are you adding experience, expertise, authority, and trust in any of your webpages, any of your blog posts? Do you currently have author bios? Do we have testimonials? Do we have this transparent pricing? Are there case studies? Exists original research, or not? Schema markup also helps identify what those various elements are.

You know, even if you’ve written content three, four years ago, going back and thinking about, you know, how could we include a case study, an actual example of someone getting a result that we’re talking about here? How can we get quotes from other from clients or how can we get quotes from other experts that would really validate what it is that we’re talking about? Okay, now. Content fit for AI. Is your content designed for AI, then?

There is now a somewhat formulaic way to make your content more structured for AI. such as lists, step-by-step instructions, and responses. You’ve probably heard people talk about answer engine optimization. And frequently, people use AI tools and post lengthy, detailed filtered questions. So the more you can provide these short structured answers to the types of questions that people are asking in conversation,

    John Jantsch ( 07: 09: 944 )

it’s totally different than ranking for some keyword term. You might appear in a percentage of searches for a very specific term because you’ve provided a very specific response. So FAQs fit right into that as well. So you can go back to your original content if you’ve already written it, add a step-by-step guide, an explanation of the content, and a table of contents…

Add some questions, even have some of your headlines be questions and then answer the question in there. Let’s say you work as a modeling contractor and you remodel homes, bathrooms, and additions. Well, you hopefully have service pages for all three of those elements that demonstrate you do lots of great work in those categories. But why not include FAQs on each and every one of those pages? People have questions.

And so it’s not only very helpful in answering the specific questions people have, but it’s also amazing search content. It’s amazing AI content. So be sure to follow through. And lastly, what are your calls to action? What does it mean when someone discovers you, is it obvious what to do next? So look at all of your top pages. Are there CTAs to call, book, order, order, or contact you directly?

give people multiple options to just click on, know, have that phone number up at the very top or have that email or have that evaluation form right there on the above the fold on the homepage so that they don’t have to go looking for it, but also in context of when they’re actually looking at a service, maybe they’re actually down to the part where they’re reading the FAQs, make sure you have CTAs there as well. Hence.

Those are some things that you might want to audit as a visibility type of approach. We’ll have the show in the show notes, like I said. We’ll actually have a checklist for this tool as well. So that’s it for today. I’m going to do another show pretty soon. Also, talk about the topics of visibility and how to create content that is both search engine-friendly. Again, we’ve got to rank for

    John Jantsch ( 09: 28.502 )

for algorithms, for search engines, for AI bots, and let’s not forget, for people. So, thank you for your time today. Hopefully we’ll run into you one of these days out there on the road.

Design Dialects: Breaking the Rules, Not the System

Speech is a complete system that is dependent on framework and behavior, not just a collection of related sounds, clauses, rules, and meanings. — Kenneth L. Pike

The internet has tones. Our pattern processes may also.

    Designing methods as living language

Design systems are living languages, not portion libraries. The parts are called terms, the patterns are called phrases, and the sentences are called layouts. The conversations we have with customers are what shape the stories that our goods represent.

But let’s remember that voices increase as a speech gets more fluent without losing its meaning. English in Scotland and English in Sydney are clearly different, but both are undeniably English. The terminology adapts to the situation while maintaining its fundamental meaning. As a Brazilian Portuguese speech who learned English with an American highlight and resides in Sydney, this couldn’t be more visible to me.

Our pattern processes must operate in the same manner. Systems that flex under pressure from the environment are weak due to rigorous adhesion to visual rules. Fluidic devices can bend without rupturing.

Consistent behavior turns into a captivity

Constant components may speed up development and bring together experiences, which was the promise of design systems. But that claim has become a prison as systems mature and goods become more sophisticated. Team submit “exception” demands in the hundreds of thousands. Alternatively of system parts, items build with solutions. Designers devote more time promoting regularity than resolving consumer issues.

Our style techniques may acquire dialects to function properly.

A pattern pronunciation is a comprehensive adaptation of a design system that maintains its core values while creating novel patterns for particular situations. Dials maintain the state’s necessary language while expanding its vocabulary to fit various people, conditions, or constraints, unlike one-off customizations or product themes.

When Perfect Consistency Is A Problem

I at Booking.com took this session without warning. Everything we A/B tested was color, version, button shapes, also logo colors. I found this stunning as a skilled with a background in graphic design and company type guides. Booking expanded into a huge without ever taking into account physical consistency, while everyone fell in love with Airbnb’s flawless design system.

The conflict taught me things important: solved issues are, not consistency.

at Shopify. Our crown jewel was Polyris ( ), a mature design language that worked well for laptop manufacturers. We were expected to follow Polaris as-is as a product staff. Then my accomplishment team slammed an” Oh, Ship”! momentous as we attempted to create an app for storehouse pickers using our interface, which we used on shared, battered Android scanners in dark aisles, thick gloves, and multiple items that were being scanned at once, many of which had only limited English comprehension.

Polaris ‘ standard completion rate is 0 %.

Every element that worked wonders for retailers totally failed to satisfy farmers. Glare was created by white background. Click targets for 44px were hidden behind covered fingers. Sentence-case names took too long to interpret. Multi-step flows confounded non-native listeners.

Polaris had to be completely abandoned, or it could be taught to speak inventory.

    The Dialect’s Baby

We favored development over trend. We created what we now refer to as a style pronunciation by adhering to Polaris’s core values of clarity, efficiency, consistency.

    ConstraintFluent ShiftRationale
Low lighting, light, and more.Black text + black areasReduce screen brightness on low-DP I displays
Gloves & urgency90px tap targets ( ~2cm )Use comfortable boots
MultilingualSingle-tasking displays in simple languageReduce cerebral strain

Results: Task completion increased from 0 % to 100 %. From three days to one move, onboard time was cut.

This was a dialect, not a modification or theming; it was a systematic translation that preserved Polaris ‘ fundamental language while creating new words for a particular context. It had picked up the language of inventory and not failed.

    The Flexibility Framework

Working on the Jira platform, which is a component of the larger Atlassian structure, I advocated formalizing this understanding at Atlassian. We needed organized flexibility because dozens of products shared a design language across various codebases, but we built our methods of working directly into our own. The previous model, which required exception requests and specific approvals, was failing on a scale.

To help manufacturers determine how versatile they wanted their pieces to be, we created the Flexibility Framework.

    TierActionOwnership
ConsistentAdopt as isDesign + script + system hair
OpinionatedAdapt within limitsSystem offers intelligent failures, and products can be modified.
FlexibleExtend easilySoftware defines conduct, and products define their presentation.

We tied down every component of a tracking redesign. International search and logo remain constant. Breadcrumbs and cultural activities evolved into Flexible. Product teams could quickly identify areas where development was welcomed and where consistency was important.

    The Decision Ladder

Freedom requires limitations. When guidelines should be broken, we created a straightforward rope.

Great: Send with already-existing system components. Strong, reliable, and steady.

Better: somewhat bend a part. Document the shift. Bring changes up to the program so that everyone can use it.

Best to first design the best experience. Update the system to make it compatible if consumer testing proves the benefit.

Which choice allows customers to achieve the quickest, in your opinion?

    Laws are tools, not replicas.

    Unity Beats Uniformity

Email, Drive, and Maps all have a distinctive Google voice, but each one speaks with its own. They achieve cohesion through shared rules, no copied parts. Engineer time is roughly$ 30K after one more year of box color debate.

Competency is a result of using, not a company. Edge the consumer when the two conflict.

    Gates ‘ Gates’ Law:

How can symmetry be maintained while enabling languages? Treat your body like a life diction:

Document every change, such as dialects or warehouses. director with explanations for before and after photos.

Promote shared patterns – when three teams adopt a slang individually and independently critique it for key addition.

Retire old idioms using flags and movement notes; this is never a big bang purge. Degrade with perspective.

A living vocabulary performs better than a freezing code.

    Begin With Your First Dialect:

Are you ready to start introducing accents? Begin with a bad practice:

Find a user flow this week where great consistency prevents tasks from being completed. Could be that mobile users have trouble with desktop-sized components or mobility issues that your standard patterns don’t target.

What causes normal patterns to fail in this context, according to the documentation? economic restrictions customer capabilities Task necessity?

Design one consistent change: Place more emphasis on behaviour than aesthetics. If gloves are the issue, bigger targets aren’t “broken the program”; they’re serving the consumer. Create the adjustments and render them deliberate.

Assess and test: Does the shift make tasks more effective? Time for performance customer fulfillment

Present the savings: Competence has already paid off by letting that dialect free perhaps a sprint.

    Beyond the Component Library

We are now cultivating style languages, no managing design systems. language that develop along with their speakers. voices without losing their significance in language. language that prioritize the needs of people over cosmetic ideals.

Our buttons breaking the style guide didn’t matter, the warehouse personnel who went from 0 % to 100 % task execution didn’t care. They were concerned about how the keys turned out.

  • An Holistic Framework for Shared Design Leadership

An Holistic Framework for Shared Design Leadership

Picture this: Two people are having what appears to be the same talk about the same design issue in a conference room at your technical company. One is talking about whether the staff has the proper skills to handle it. The other examines whether the answer really addresses the user’s issue. Similar room, the same issue, and entirely different perspectives.

This is the lovely, sometimes messy fact of having both a Design Manager and a Guide Designer on the same group. And you’re asking the right question if you’re wondering how to make this job without creating confusion, coincide, or the feared” to some cooks” situation.

Fresh lines on an organizational chart have always been the standard solution. The Design Manager handles persons, the Lead Designer handles art. Problem is fixed, isn’t it? Except that fresh organizational charts are fantasy. In fact, both roles care greatly about crew health, style quality, and shipping great work.

When you begin to think of your design organization as a design species, the magic happens when you accept collide rather than fight it.

    A Healthy Design Team’s Biology

Here’s what I’ve learned from years of being on both flanks of this formula: think of your design team as a living organism. The design manager has a focus on the internal safety, career advancement, team dynamics, and other aspects. The Lead Designer concentrates on the body ( the handiwork, the design standards, the hands-on projects that are delivered to users ).

But just like mind and body aren’t totally separate systems, but, also, do these tasks overlap in significant ways. Without working in harmony with one another, you didn’t have a good man. The technique is to know where those aligns are and how to manage them gently.

When we look at how good team really function, three critical devices emerge. Each requires the collaboration of both jobs, but one must assume the lead role in maintaining that system sturdy.

Individuals & Psychology: The Nervous System

    Major caregiver: Design Manager
    Supporting duties: Guide Custom

The anxious system is all about mental health, feedback, and signals. When this technique is good, information flows easily, people feel safe to take risks, and the staff may react quickly to new problems.

The main caregiver here is the Design Manager. They are keeping track of the team’s mental state, making sure feedback loops are good, and creating the environment for growth. They’re hosting job meetings, managing task, and making sure no single burns out.

However, the Lead Designer has a vital enabling position. They’re offering visual feedback on build development needs, identifying stagnant design skills in someone, and pointing out potential growth opportunities that the Design Manager might overlook.

    Design Manager tends to:

    • discussions about careers and career development
    • emotional stability and dynamics of the group
    • Job management and resource allocation
    • Performance evaluations and opinions management methods
    • Providing opportunities for learning

    Direct Custom supports by:

    • Providing craft-specific evaluation of staff member growth
    • identifying opportunities for growth in style skills gaps
    • Providing style mentorship and assistance
    • indicating when a crew is prepared for more challenging tasks.

The Muscular System: Design, Design, and Execution

    Major custodian: Lead Designer
    Supporting duties: Design Manager

The skeletal structure focuses on developing strength, coordination, and talent development. When this technique is healthy, the team can do complicated design work with precision, maintain regular quality, and adjust their craft to fresh challenges.

The Lead Designer is the main caregiver at this place. They oversee the creation of quality standards, provide craft instruction, and set design standards. They’re the ones who can tell you if a design decision is sound or if we’re solving the right problem.

However, the Design Manager has a significant supporting role. They’re making sure the team has the resources and support they need to perform their best work, such as proper nutrition and time for an athlete recovering.

    Lead Designer tends to:

    • Definition of system usage and design standards
    • Feedback on design work that meets the required standards
    • Experience direction for the product
    • Design choices and product-wide alignment
    • advancement of craft and innovation

    Design Manager supports by:

    • ensuring that all members of the team are aware of and adopt design standards
    • Confirming that the right course of action is being taken
    • Supporting practices and systems that scale without bottlenecking
    • facilitating design alignment among all teams
    • Providing resources and removing obstacles for outstanding craft work

The Circulatory System: Strategy &amp, Flow

Shared caretakers: Lead Designer and Design Manager, respectively.

The circulatory system is concerned with how the team’s decisions and energy are distributed. When this system is healthy, strategic direction is clear, priorities are aligned, and the team can respond quickly to new opportunities or challenges.

True partnership occurs in this context. Although both positions bring unique perspectives, keeping the circulation strong is a dual responsibility.

    Lead Designer contributes:

    • The product fulfills the user’s needs.
    • overall experience and product quality
    • Strategic design initiatives
    • User needs based on research for each initiative

    Design Manager contributes:

    • Communication to team and stakeholders
    • Stakeholder management and alignment
    • Team accountability across all levels
    • Strategic business initiatives

    Both parties work together on:

    • Co-creation of strategy and leadership
    • Team goals and prioritization approach
    • organizational structure decisions
    • Success frameworks and measures

    Keeping the Organism Healthy

Understanding that all three systems must work together is the key to making this partnership sing. A team with excellent craftmanship but poor psychological protection will eventually burn out. A team with great culture but weak craft execution will ship mediocre work. A team that has both but poor strategic planning will concentrate on the wrong things.

Be Specific About the System You’re Defending.

When you’re in a meeting about a design problem, it helps to acknowledge which system you’re primarily focused on. Everyone has context for their input.” I’m thinking about this from a team capacity perspective” ( nervous system ) or” I’m looking at this through the lens of user needs” ( muscular system ).

This is not about staying in your own path. It’s about being transparent as to which lens you’re using, so the other person knows how to best add their perspective.

    Create wholesome feedback loops

The partnerships that I’ve seen have the most effective partnerships that create clear feedback loops between the systems:

Nervous system signals to muscular system:” The team is struggling with confidence in their design skills” → Lead Designer provides more craft coaching and clearer standards.

The nervous system receives the message” The team’s craft skills are progressing more quickly than their project complexity.”

We’re seeing patterns in team health and craft development that suggest we need to adjust our strategic priorities, both systems say to the circulatory system.

    Handle Handoffs Gracefully

When something switches from one system to another, this partnership’s pivotal moment is. This might occur when a design standard ( muscular system ) needs to be implemented across the team ( nervous system ) or when a tactical initiative ( circulatory system ) requires specific craft execution ( muscular system ).

Make these transitions explicit. The new component standards have been defined. Can you give me some ideas for how to get the team up to speed? or” We’ve agreed on this strategic direction. From here, I’ll concentrate on the specific user experience approach.

    Stay curious and not territorial.

The Design Manager who never thinks about craft, or the Lead Designer who never considers team dynamics, is like a doctor who only looks at one body system. Even when they aren’t the primary caretaker, great design leadership requires both people to be as concerned with the entire organism.

Rather than making assumptions, one must ask questions. ” What do you think about the team’s craft development in this area”? or” How do you think this is affecting team morale and workload”? keeps both viewpoints at the forefront of every choice.

    When the Organism Gets Sick

This partnership can go wrong even with clear roles. Which failure modes are the most prevalent in my experience:

    System Isolation

The Design Manager ignores craft development and only concentrates on the nervous system. The Lead Designer ignores team dynamics and concentrates solely on the muscular system. Both people retreat to their comfort zones and stop collaborating.

The signs: Team members receive conflicting messages, work conditions suffer, and morale declines.

Reconnect with other people’s goals in the treatment. What are you both trying to achieve? It’s typically excellent design work that arrives on time from a capable team. Discover how both systems accomplish that goal.

    Poor Circulation

There is no clear strategic direction, shifting priorities, or accepting responsibility for the flow of information.

The signs are: Team members are unsure of their priorities, work is duplicated or dropped, and deadlines are missed.

The treatment: Explicitly assign responsibility for circulation. Who is communicating with whom? How frequently? What’s the feedback loop?

    Autoimmune Response

The other person’s expertise makes them feel threatened. The Design Manager thinks the Lead Designer is undermining their authority. The Design Manager is allegedly misunderstanding the craft, according to the lead designer.

The signs: defensive behavior, territorial disputes, team members stifled in the middle.

The treatment: Remember that you’re both caretakers of the same organism. The entire team suffers when one system fails. The team thrives when both systems are strong.

    The Payoff

Yes, there is more communication required with this model. Yes, it requires that both parties be confident enough to assume full responsibility for team health. But the payoff is worth it: better decisions, stronger teams, and design work that’s both excellent and sustainable.

The best of both worlds can be found in strong people leadership and deep craft expertise when both roles are healthy and effective together. One person can help keep the team’s health when one is sick, on vacation, or overjoyed. When a decision requires both the people perspective and the craft perspective, you’ve got both right there in the room.

Most importantly, the framework is flexible. As your team expands, you can use the same system thinking to new problems. Need to launch a design system? Both the muscular system ( standards and implementation ), the nervous system (team adoption and change management ), and both have a tendency to circulate ( communication and stakeholder alignment ).

    The End result

The relationship between a Design Manager and Lead Designer isn’t about dividing territories. It’s about multiplying impact. Magic occurs when both roles are aware that they are tending to various components of the same healthy organism.

The mind and body work together. The team benefits from both strategic thinking and craftmanship. And most importantly, users benefit from both perspectives when they receive the work.

So the next time you’re in that meeting room, wondering why two people are talking about the same problem from different angles, remember: you’re watching shared leadership in action. And if it’s functioning well, your design team’s mind and body will both become stronger.

  • From Beta to Bedrock: Build Products that Stick.

From Beta to Bedrock: Build Products that Stick.

As a solution builder for too many times, I can’t recall how many times I’ve seen promising ideas go from being heroes in a few weeks to being useless within months.

Financial goods, which is the industry in which I work, are no exception. It’s tempting to put as many features at the ceiling as possible and expect something sticks because people’s true, hard-earned money is on the line, user expectations are high, and crowded market. However, this strategy will lead to disaster. Why, please:

    The drawbacks of feature-first growth

It’s simple to get swept up in the enthusiasm of developing innovative features when you start developing a financial product from scratch or are migrating existing client journeys from paper or phone channels to online bank or mobile apps. They may think,” If I may only add one more thing that solves this particular person problem, they’ll appreciate me”! But what happens if you eventually encounter a roadblock as a result of your security team’s negligence? don’t like it, right? When a battle-tested film isn’t as well-known as you anticipated, or when it fails due to unforeseen difficulty?

The concept of Minimum Viable Product ( MVP ) comes into play in this area. Even though Jason Fried doesn’t usually refer to it that way, his podcast Rework and his book Getting Real frequently address this concept. An MVP is a product that offers only enough value to your users to keep them interested, but not so much that it becomes difficult to keep up. Although the idea seems simple, it requires a razor-sharp eye, a ruthless edge, and the courage to stand up for your position because it is easy to fall for” the Columbo Effect” when there is always” just one more thing …” to add.

The issue with most fund apps is that they frequently turn out to be reflections of the company’s internal politics rather than an experience created purely for the customer. This implies that the priority should be given to delivering as some features and functionalities as possible in order to satisfy the requirements and wishes of competing internal departments as opposed to crafting a compelling value proposition that is focused on what people in the real world actually want. These products may therefore quickly become a muddled mess of confusing, related, and finally unlovable client experiences—a feature salad, you might say.

    The significance of the foundation

What is a better strategy, then? How can we create items that are reliable, user-friendly, and most importantly, stick?

The concept of “bedrock” comes into play here. Rock is the main feature of your solution that really matters to customers. The foundation of worth and relevance over time is built upon it.

The core has to be in and around the standard servicing journeys in the world of retail bank, which is where I work. People only look at their existing account once every blue moon, but they do so daily. They purchase a credit card every year or two, but they at least once a month assess their stability and pay their bills.

The key is in identifying the main tasks that individuals want to complete and therefore persistently striving to make them simple, reliable, and trustworthy.

How can you reach the foundation, though? By focusing on the” MVP” strategy, giving convenience precedence, and working iteratively toward a clear value proposition. This entails removing unneeded functions and putting the emphasis on providing genuine value to your users.

It even requires having some nerve, as your coworkers might not always agree with you immediately. And dubiously, occasionally it can even suggest making it clear to customers that you won’t be coming to their house and making their breakfast. Sometimes you need to use the sporadic “opinionated user interface design” ( i .e. clunky workaround for edge cases ) to test a concept or to give yourself some more time to work on something more crucial.

Functional methods for creating reliable economic products

What are the main learnings I’ve made from my own research and knowledge, then?

    1. What issue are you attempting to resolve first, and why? Who is it for? Before beginning any construction, make sure your goal is completely clear. Make certain it also aligns with the goals of your business.
    2. Avoid the temptation to put too many characteristics at once and focus on getting that right first. Choose one that actually adds price, and work from that.
    3. When it comes to financial goods, clarity is often more important than difficulty. Eliminate unwanted details and concentrate solely on what matters most.
    4. Accept constant iteration as Bedrock is a powerful process rather than a set destination. Continuously collect customer feedback, make product improvements, and advance in that direction.
    5. Halt, look, and listen: You don’t just have to test your product during the delivery process; you must also test it consistently in the field. Use it for yourself. A/B tests are run. User comments on Gatter. Speak to users and make adjustments accordingly.

    The core dilemma

This is an intriguing conundrum: sacrificing some of the potential for short-term progress in favor of long-term stability. But the reward is worthwhile because products created with a concentrate on core will outlive and outperform their competitors and provide people with ongoing value over time.

How do you begin your quest for rock, then? Consider it gradually. Start by identifying the essential components that your customers actually care about. Focus on developing and improving a second, potent have that delivers real value. And most importantly, make an obsessive effort because, whatever you think, Abraham Lincoln, Alan Kay, or Peter Drucker, you can’t deny it! The best way to foretell the future is to build it, he said.

    Alan Ritchson

Reacher superstar Alan Ritchson, who is easily the most well-known of the Bat-hopefuls, has made it clear that he wants to transfer his expertise to Gotham City. Ritchson and Gunn have actually spoken about a location in the fresh world. Ritchson makes perfect sense on one hand because he previously appeared in the DC Universe as Hawk in the broadcast set Titans. On the other hand, Ritchson is really, really huge, which isn’t always something one associates with a guy who spends his night perched on the cliffs of houses.

Or is it? The Caped Crusader is reimagined in the current hit comic book series Absolute Batman as a large dude as well as a person raised in poverty by his single mom. Ben Barnes

Ben Barnes, who is a newcomer to the party, is best known for his roles in The Punisher and Shadow and Bone. Barnes definitely has the traditional look of the melancholy Bruce Wayne due to his gloomy characteristics and good looks. Even though The Punisher was a much more grounded display than Brave and the Bold, Barnes at least has demonstrated how to operate in a world where costumed police are present.

Barnes makes his ball, yet, by appealing to feeling rather than by consulting his profile. Barnes mentions watching old home videos, and in every one, I dressed like Batman or Robin Hood, in a conversation with Collider. There may have been a Spider-Man one, but I believe it was primarily Batman. One would typically assume that a nice family memory wouldn’t be a good fit for a man who reportedly had a difficult childhood wouldn’t be a good pitch to play. However, perhaps Gunn will find Barnes &#8217’s unconventional approach appealing.

Julia Schlaepfer as Alexandra and Brandon Sklenar as Spencer of the Paramount+ series 1923.

    Brandon Sklenar

Brandon Sklenar has stated that he wants to enjoy Batman, just like the others on the list. He hasn’t, however, made too many sound himself because his supporters are supporting him. There is already a little backlash against him being chosen for #8230, which, to be clear, hasn’t really happened yet. Sklenar has been a well-liked fan cast in some corners of the internet.

Due to his position as Spencer Dutton in the Yellowstone prequel 1923, Sklenar has encounter working in style and major franchises. And while other topics dominated the discussion around the release of the film It Stops With Us from last year, Sklenar did a good job portraying a handsome man with a dark mystery. Sklenar might not be a good fit for Batman, especially as he attempts to raise his warrior killer son, but those scenes also have a specific sweetness.

    Jake Gyllenhaal

Jake Gyllenhaal appears in the TV series Sklenar more as a recommendation for a lover cast than as a pleading actor. But he has at least made a comment about the possibility. When speaking with the media about the Road House remake from last year’s, Gyllenhaal was asked about his interest in taking the piece, to which he graciously responded. &#8220, Oh, man. That’s a classic [role ] It’s an pride, &#8221, Gyllenhaal responded.

On the surface, Gyllenhaal’s reaction is expected. Who isn’t going to be interested in playing a wildly popular figure in a film that will undoubtedly bring in millions of dollars? On the other hand, twenty years ago, Gyllenhaal was the film’s main competitor Batman Begins. And while he hasn’t had the chance to play a fresh Batman, he might be in the right place to play an older Batman who struggles with paternity.

    The Batman Robert Pattinson

    Robert Pattinson

Perhaps Robert Pattinson shouldn’t even be on this list for a few factors. First of all, because he’s already Batman and plays the part in Matt Reeves ‘” The Batman.” Next, he hasn’t said anything about wanting to be in The Brave and the Bold. Carter and Gunn have both made it clear that The Batman is distinct from the rest of the DCU.

And yet, the greater the Batman role in The Brave and the Bold is unfilled, the more likely it is that Pattinson will assume the role. Yes, he has an older, more mature, and heartfelt edition of the Dark Knight than the Grant Morrison comic, complete with its dying squad and crazy professionals from other sizes. However, it’s difficult to imagine that Gunn isn’t giving a damn about bringing him into the principal DCU because Pattinson already has the suit.

First of all, because he’s already Batman and plays the part in Matt Reeves ‘” The Batman.” Next, he hasn’t said anything about wanting to appear in The Brave and the Bold. Carter and Gunn have both made it clear that The Batman is distinct from the rest of the DCU.

And still, the more the Batman role in The Brave and the Bold is unfilled, the more we consider Pattinson merely taking the place. Yes, he portrays the Dark Knight with its eternal warriors and crazy researchers from different sizes in a more grounded, younger, and personal way than the Grant Morrison comics do. However, it’s difficult to imagine that Gunn isn’t giving a damn about bringing him into the primary DCU because Pattinson already has the suit.

When Michael Keaton suddenly dissipated all doubts about him being the person wearing the Dark Knight’s cape and cowl at the start of 1989 with those infamous words at the beginning of Batman. Up until then, many fans were irritated by the idea of the sly actor taking the part. In truth, they launched a letter-writing plan to demand that Warner Bros. cast the character.

It&#8217 ;s kind of fitting, then, that Batman’s status is still so contentious today. Questions abound again more about the new keeper of Gotham City as James Gunn reboots the DC Universe and makes the older, grizzled Batman played by Ben Affleck ( and we’re not going to talk about George Clooney reprising the piece in the trailer in The Display ).

    Alan Ritchson

Reacher superstar Alan Ritchson has made it clear that he wants to transfer his talents to Gotham City, making his debut among the most well-known Bat-hopefuls. Ritchson has actually spoken to Gunn about a location in the fresh world. Ritchson makes perfect sense on one hand because he previously appeared in the DC Universe as Hawk in the broadcast set Titans. Ritchson is actually, really huge, which isn’t always something one associates with a man who spends his nights perched on the rocks of structures.

Or is it? The Caped Crusader is reimagined in the current hit comic book series Absolute Batman as a large dude raised in poverty by his single mom. Although Complete Batman places characters in other worlds than the traditional DC world, its popularity provides the most compelling argument for Ritchson to date.

    Ben Barnes

Ben Barnes, who is best known for his roles in The Punisher and Shadow and Bone, is a newcomer to the class. Barnes definitely has the traditional look of the gloomy Bruce Wayne due to his gloomy characteristics and good looks. Even though The Punisher was a much more grounded present than Brave and the Bold, Barnes is at least demonstrating how to operate in a world where costumed police are present.

Barnes’s angle, however, is made by appealing to feeling rather than by referencing his resume. Barnes mentions watching old home videos, and in every one, I dressed like Batman or Robin Hood, in a conversation with Collider. There may have been a Spider-Man one, but I believe it was primarily Batman. One would typically assume that a nice family memory wouldn’t make a great actor for a man who is infamously from a difficult childhood. However, Gunn might find Barnes ‘&#8217’s unconventional approach appealing.

    Brandon Sklenar

Brandon Sklenar has stated that he would like to enjoy Batman, just like the others on this record. But because his followers are making it for him, he hasn’t had to make too much noise himself. There is already a little backlash against him being chosen for #8230, which, to be clear, hasn’t really happened already. Sklenar has been a well-liked fan cast in some corners of the internet.

Due to his position as Spencer Dutton in the Yellowstone prequel 1923, Sklenar has encounter working in style and large franchises. And while other topics dominated the discussion around the release of the film It Stops With Us from last year, Sklenar did a good job portraying a handsome man with a dark mystery. Sklenar might not be a good fit for Batman, particularly as with Caped Crusader trying to raise his hero killer son, but those scenes also have a particular sweetness.

On the one hand, Gyllenhaal’s reply is expected. Who isn’t going to be interested in playing a wildly famous figure in a film that will undoubtedly bring in millions of dollars? On the other hand, twenty years ago, Gyllenhaal was the front-runner for Batman Begins. And while he hasn’t had the chance to play a fresh Batman, he might be in the right place to play an older Batman who struggles with paternity.
