Enthusiasts and reviewers try to explain why things are different this time around when a new period of a big tentpole science fiction comes along. New times usually proclaim a new put part or a shake-up behind the scenes in the creative team will change anything. The positive aspect of Star Trek: Odd New Worlds Season 3 is that it’s essentially the identical present it’s been since 2022 despite the two-year worry. For the cast and showrunners of the mega-popular Paramount + series, the edict for season 3 is very clear: If ain’t broken, don’t bring in Scotty to fix it.
” I believe the continuity of keeping it a unique story and music keeps it. Every season we’re keeping it classic”, sun Celia Rose Gooding says. Every event is a strange new world, and I believe that’s what keeps followers coming back.
But what kinds of unusual new kingdoms can enthusiasts expect in a second time? And is the key to this show’s success simply its tribute feelings, or is there something more to it? In addition to Gooding, we even talked to put people Anson Mount, Carol Kane, Ethan Peck, Babs Olusanmokun, and screenwriters Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers to look back at the future of the Final Frontier.  ,
It’s Been a Long Road ,
Although Anson Mount and Ethan Peck’s Star Trek: Strange New Worlds may seem like a relatively new series ( it premiered in 2022 ), this project has been running for almost a decade, starting with their first appearance as Captain Pike and Mr. Spock in Star Trek: Discovery Season 2 seven years ago.
” There was a lot of pain that sort of turned into convenience over time”, Peck says of playing Spock since 2019. There are instances where I’m on set and I’m unsure whether I’m being Sphere enough or Ethan. And I’, m like,’ Where’, s the collection?’ We spend a lot of time as these heroes, and the column eventually gets a little fuzzy.
For Mount, the change of Pike—from TOS trivia question to precious lead in Strange New Worlds —has likewise been a personal journey. And it completely fused him to Pike.
” For whatever reason, this figure is close to me than a lot of different characters that I have played”, Mount admits. However, I believe our display has a slightly different voice than Discovery‘s overall. We decided to bear down on the optimism of Trek and the planet-of-the-week, and in order to get there, Pike had to learn that the journey is the destination” . ,  ,
A Odd, New Serialization
Despite its reputation for harkening back to the type and format of The Original Series, the success of Strange New Worlds isn’t really because it duplicates the self-contained character of the classic Star Trek present. Unusual New Worlds does have a published feel to it, unlike many other contemporary TV shows. But those circles aren’t just connected to the science fiction reports. The characters are the serial in Odd New Worlds.  ,
Co-showrunner Goldsman says,” There are some forms of relationship reports you can simply tell over day.” ” So when we talk about this serialized character arc competent of the show, we’re doing something The Original Series couldn’t” . ,
The City on the Edge of Forever, a typical TOS episode, is presented by Goldsman as the best illustration of both a great episode of the series and how it shows how the limitations of the classic series are demonstrated. We got to know the TOS put pretty also from 1966 to 1969, but it’s not like the figures had full circles.
Nothing irritates me more than Kirk losing Edith Keeler in a week and being good the following year, Goldsman says. ” But on our show, we really can speak about relationships having foundations, corners, and finishes. They were kind of trapped in limbo in a peculiar method because they couldn’t, t. But we’re never”.
The conversion of Gooding’s taking on Nyota Uhura is a prime example of how this kind of personality evolution unfolds in season 3. Thanks to Odd New Worlds ‘ character-driven acute circles, she’s had much more growth with her younger Releases than Nichelle Nichols ever had on The Original Series, to state everything of Zoe Saldaña’s Uhura in the reboot shows. Gooding’s is the one we’ve come to know the best, despite the two prior Uhuras ‘ iconic status. In reality, the quest of her humble Uhura in seasons 1 and 2 will start to fully fit into the more exuberant Bans of The Original Series during the upcoming year 3.
With period 3,” I believe we now have a chance to demonstrate her more seductive and playful side,” Gooding says. ” In the previous times, she was a figure with so much detail and history and pain. We can now see how she continues to find happiness, humor, and softness. It’s quite reminiscent of the Colonel Releases we see in TOS. That’s a shift from what we’ve seen of her in past times.
On the other side of the Starfleet historical gold is Dr.M’Benga as played by Babs Olusanmokun. Olusanmokun’s portrayal of the man has been one of pure invention rather than reinvention. He was a minor character who appeared in just two TOS episodes ( as played by Booker Bradshaw ). When it comes toM’Benga, cannon rarely matters. The main protagonist was essentially a blank slate. But while he started out as a compassionate doctor with a strange past in Odd New Worlds ‘ second season, in season 2, we discovered a more natural, action-adventure version ofM’Benga, a trend that Olusanmokun ensures will continue in season 3.
There are other parts of him that we are still figuring out, says Olusanmokun. ” But, yes, we leaned into that for season 2 and there’s more of that in season 3″ . ,
Olusanmokun is known for playing the Fremen Jamis in both Dune: Part One and Part Two, and he possesses this skill in total screen inM’Benga in Odd New Worlds Season 3. But, is this character the most dangerous doctor in Star Trek history? Could this savage take Dr. Bashir or Bones in a fight? Olusanmokun hints at a connection between himself and the quiet strength ofM’Benga, saying only,” Those that know what they do don’t talk about what they do, or glorify what they do. They simply carry it out.
Keeping Things Light ,
The Star Trek phenomenon would be nothing without humor, despite the franchise’s reputation for self-seriousness and social commentary about the nature of humanity. And it’s here that Strange New Worlds Season 3 excels: it brings the fun to the Final Frontier without completely turning the show into a full-on sitcom ( although one episode this season might qualify as a rom-com! ). However, some characters couldn’t function without this humorous element. Hence in the second season, the producers enlisted the legendary Carol Kane to join the crew as the semi-immortal Pelia, a chief engineer with the irascibility of Bones and a sweetness that is all her own.
No, we haven’t misidentified her with singer Carol King. ” They thought I wrote the Tapestry album”, Kane jokes. This is my first time explaining this to them. Do you still love me”?
One thing Kane has changed in season three is her relationship with Pelia’s former student, Montgomery Scott, better known as Scotty. Played by Martin Quinn in the season 2 finale, Scotty is back in season 3 as a full member of the cast.
Oh, I love him. He is just adorable. He’s so entertaining, Kane exclaims. She also says that she feels that her character benefits from the company of the rest of the crew, something that comes across both in real life and on the screen.
” I was very moved by how I was accepted right away,” the performer says. ” My first scene was with Ethan who just accepted me. My natural instinct is to just try and dive right into the writing and put in the effort and commitment necessary, which is how she came out. I think they wrote a lovely character for me and I am very grateful”.
Peck, Gooding, and Mount all praise the comedy in an episode that was directed by Jonathan Frakes this season. Gooding also reveals that some bits in that forthcoming episode were teased out by Frakes. I feel so much more free to experiment and do fun things when Jonathan Frakes appears on the set as a director.
Mount agrees, saying with a sly smile:” Jonathan loves to be on set because he’s a fucking actor”. However, Mount claims that the Strange New Worlds set’s setting frequently encourages humorous creativity in relation to the production of comedy. Sometimes on the fly. Comedy occurs when you find it, he claims. ” And so you ’, re constantly kind of changing things just for the sake of seeing if you can find something new”.
Beyond the Five-Year Mission
Every episode of Strange New Worlds begins with Captain Pike echoing the familiar words of Captain Kirk, telling us that this is a “five-year mission” of the USS Enterprise. It was revealed that this time limit is somewhat literal just before we sat down with the show’s cast and creative team. Like two other contemporary Paramount + Trek shows—Discovery and Lower Decks—Strange New Worlds will conclude after its fifth season, likely released sometime in 2027. There are still three full seasons of the show fans haven’t seen yet, which suggests a sort of finale to the series.
” I don’t feel like we’re doing the same thing each season”, co-showrunner Henry Alonso Myers says. Without going into specifics, there are some things in season 4 that people do that we haven’t seen those characters do. Every day is like that”.
Both Myers and Goldsman assert that Strange New Worlds season 3 and season 4 will continue to fulfill what the series ‘ promise was to make a possible adaptation of The Original Series. But because Strange New Worlds uses classic characters who have been around for nearly 60 years, Goldsman agrees that on some level, the show is a bit like the various novels and comics based on the TOS cast, some of which satiated fans ‘ hunger when there was zero Star Trek on TV back in the 1970s and early 1980s. This is not exactly fan fiction; rather, it is an expanded version of the original series that was previously only available in comics and books.
” It’s a good comparison, thinking about the books. Although I’ve never thought about it, Goldsman claims that’s exactly who we are. ” We’re behind the canon. We’re beyond what is apparent,” he says.
So, outside of the next three years of Strange New Worlds adventures, what’s next? Could Strange New Worlds turn into a little bit of a reboot of The Original Series? Goldsman isn’t saying yes, but he’s not saying no either.
He claims that “our goal has always been to get to TOS.” ” The plan was that we would have five years to move from the Strange New Worlds cast and crew to a TOS show. That’s the hope, whether we do or not.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3 debuts with two episodes on Paramount + on July 17.
