Yeah, that &#8217, s a somewhat clickbait-y subject, but these are terrible times. Colleges are cutting programs, scaling manner up and in some serious instances, closing immediately. It’s difficult to get a whole week without hearing a story about the looming end of higher education.

Is higher ed dying? No, I don&#8217, t think thus. Is it ill? Yes, I believe thus.

Recently, I came across a news article about the absence of university degrees for employees at large companies like Google, Apple, and Netflix. I was struck by this statement:

Tim Cook, the CEO of Apple, recently claimed that about half of the company’s US workforce last year was made up of people without four-year levels. Cook argued that many schools do not impart the skills that business leaders require most, such as programming.

That&#8217, s worrying, but hardly shocking. It&#8217, s challenging to rapidly pivot at businesses as big as a school. Apple may choose to stop producing X monday and switch to Y. This is much more difficult to do for us.

As we go through the college search process with our oldest kid, I’ve been thinking about this a bit since. I’ve been paying attention to the outcomes, the price, and the experience my son may have like never before. What will the practice be like for my younger brother five years after that? Hope to read a lot of posts about my experiences with this research method in the upcoming months. I’m aware of how bacon is made, so I’ve been both amazed and completely shocked by how some schools approach potential students. That&#8217, s a ( series of ) post ( s ) for another day.

I watched this video last week, and while I disagree with some of the things Patrick Bet-David is saying, some of them make a lot of sense, especially the passages about speed, memory, and tech changing so quickly that some programs are out of time before they even begin. Last month, I wrote about my practice of getting to 500, 000 people account views on Snap. This is a crucial time for the social media platform, as new sites like TikTok are gaining a lot of popularity worldwide, particularly in higher education.

Now, I write to let you hear that earlier this summer, I crossed the million people account views step. On my Snap. I know, it &#8217, s nuts.

It&#8217, s strange to think people around the world have watched 40 weeks worth of my articles. My information? It&#8217, s no badly interesting. It&#8217, s a lot of food photos taken while I&#8217, m flying and rubber I&#8217, have been listening to nowadays.

Studies on a million views on Snapchat

Second, Snapchat is n&#8217, t dying. While it &#8217, s certainly not aimed at me and people my age, it &#8217, s still used heavily by its younger users. My oldest, who is nearly 18 years old, is typically accessible via Snap or Instagram. It&#8217, s a huge communication tool for one to one and group messages.

Second, the analysis available to energy consumers have n&#8217, t changed all the many. Automattic, the firm that runs WordPress.com and many other services like JetPack, WooCommerce and more has received$ 300 million USD in funding from Amazon. From TechCrunch:

Automattic, the company behind WordPress.com, WooCommerce and soon Tumblr, has closed a$ 300 million funding round at a$ 3 billion post-money valuation. The Collection D square has a second investor, Salesforce Ventures.

First off, congratulations to Matt Mullenweg and the Automattic crew for this round. That&#8217, s a huge investment and Sap is an interesting, and single companion in this expense. This will increase service, integrate new mergers like Tumblr, and create more jobs. All great stuff. I would love for someone to commit anything, let alone some hundred million dollars in my business.

This is what VentureBeat claims about the bargain:

It’s not difficult to understand why Salesforce would commit such a large sum in a business known for its blog posts when you read them. One-third of the web is now powered by WordPress, which includes websites for small-time blogs as well as publishers and online retailers. Additionally, some products in Automattic’s army offer hints as to why Salesforce chose to make an investment in the business.

What does this mean for you?

What does this funding mean for those of us who use, build for, and are deeply in the pits with WordPress has been the question I’ve been thinking about all day. I believe the responses are both positive and negative.

To begin, it means more advertising. I don&#8217, t suggest show or text advertisements are going to start populating WordPress. Otherwise, you are going to see an increase in the development of Automattic&#8217, s services and products in goods like WooCommerce, product files and more, putting their goods in front of tens of millions of WordPress customers, admins and developers.

You might have already witnessed this in motion. This Spring, WooCommerce started pushing their apps and add-ons as &#8220, recommended additions, &#8221, and wonder, they &#8217, re all Automattic/WooCommerce owned people. About this novel kind of &#8220, campaign, &#8221, Erik Bernskiold said this:

” I understand that WooCommerce wants to profit from their business.”

On one hand, I get it. These people can brighten up your tweet’s text copy and give it some life. This comes with a find nevertheless. Those special figures may crack convenience. This includes being able to read talk from monitor visitors and other speech resources.

Why is this poor?

In that message from the Cleveland Cavaliers, you can see the phrase &#8220, fifty &#8221, is really little cap numeric figures. It&#8217, s a great effect, but it can wreak disaster in camera users.

Why are these people poor? First, they were designed as mathematical and other symbols, so screen readers either skip them ( which happens when I use my Mac&#8217, s speech feature ) or read out to the user the symbol equivalent. In this picture, you can see a fantastic case:

What about adding symbols to comments? The

If backing up your website isn’t a vital component of your plan, it should be. If anything goes wrong, you can’t manage to have your website offline. With regular updates, you can alleviate those problems.

WordPress type 5.3 released last year. There are adjustments to how WordPress handles files of enormous images in this launch. Before version 5.3, the program would let you or your users publish images of any size to the media library.

Although this is not a problem, many websites and themes lack involuntary image and/or preview image sizing. For most people, they won&#8217, t observe this change. It may reduce report size and quicken downloads. There are situations where you need to be able to capture the full picture, though. Yes, you have those new features, but that will suggest having to back into your concept or addon.

To accomplish this, you can turn off the resizing by adding this screen to your works. html file:

Even with this shift in image processing, you should be optimizing your images independently. Existing marketing systems won’t be impacted by this innovative change.

In the past, I’ve written extensively about enhancing the functionality of your WordPress page. That’s really important job you can do, as speed issues. But what happens if anything occurs on your website? What if you’re hacked, or the hard drive on your site dies? These are all typical circumstances that may cause you to be without your web content and suffer. Backups will be your best companion in the event that any of these tragedies occur. In this three-part series, we’ll examine how and why to copy your site.

Why does your Blog web be backed up?

Backups should be a significant component of any online strategy, and one of the most important components is how to protect your site.

If you’re using WordPress to manage your website ( and you should, it’s a fantastic tool ), you have to worry about several pieces and parts — from websites to comments, media to addons, there’s a lot to stay updated. Files are key to this.

Your WordPress blog may be backed up. Period, complete stop. If you are relying on your hosting service to do it, you may be disappointed. They might not be backing up all of your information much. Setting up site files will bring you peace of mind, and they are something you can do easily yourself.

As you’ll see below, there are many choices when it comes to storing your files.

Addons You Support

There are a number of back apps, many of which are either free or paid for. I am a person and lover of UpdraftPlus, one of the more common WordPress storage apps. It&#8217, s a fixed it and forget it device that will copy your blog data, press, plugins, themes, and more on a routine you determine.

The only negative aspect of Updraft is that it likes to compel you to sign up for their premium program. I don’t mind if a widget designer requests updates from users, but Updraft does it frequently. However, Updraft deserves credit for providing information on how to conceal scold information.

In addition to Updraft, there are many copy addons, both free and paid, available to download. These include apps like BackWPup, which works equally to Updraft in that you can control where you can go.

Next, we&#8217, d talked about how often you should be backing up your blog. Then, it &#8217, s time to explore where the best place is to store your files. You have plenty of options, including free and paid choices, for making this important selection.

Let&#8217, s speak about them from worst to best, in my opinion.

No The Best

You might see email as an alternative for your automatic backups when using your copy plugin or text. You may n&#8217, t give your site files to your contact address. First, contact can be uncomfortable. Your statistics might be exposed while using the internet. Additionally, some message service providers may prevent big backup files from being received. Just use this as a last resort.

Somewhat Better

Storing your files on your site locally is another option. This is great for quick files before you test or update a widget, for example, but it &#8217, s not a good long-term place to store your files. If anything happens to your web hosting server, your data may also be affected. It does n&#8217, t get much to split a site, particularly on a shared hosting service, where resources are oversold and security is weak. If a drive fails, or a blog is hacked, your updates may remain, at best, lost and and at worst, compromised. Don&#8217, t keep them on your hosting site.

If you try to copy or travel your website, you might encounter problems as well. We just had to create a backup of their website for a client we were working with. I was shocked to discover that my site’s chuck was over 25GB, yet with WordPress’s media folder untouched. They apparently were storing their files locally, so the widget I was using to travel the site included those backups.

Getting Much

A good place to start your backup plan is by setting up the files to be quickly sent to a different site or service like Dropbox.

You can save your files in services like Dropbox, OneDrive, or Google Drive thanks to some apps, including Updraft. These are great places to save your documents as you begin your copy journey. But, services like Dropbox may provide just a certain amount of free space, but keep an eye on your restrictions. You ought to be aware that if you use things liar,

We all anticipated a lot more from this year. Naturally. Sorry for the exaggeration, but it &#8217, s real, especially when it comes to hosting events in higher physician. We all saw our large organized activities like admitted scholar open houses, initiation, students meetings, seminars and more postponed, done on Zoom, or cancelled.

As the parent of an incoming freshman school student, I have participated in numerous Zoom activities this spring and summer. Some were excellent. Some were Fine. Some were terrible. There are just so many variables when it comes to internet events, especially when there are many people coming from different locations. There are so many factors when it comes to people&#8217, s cameras, lighting, microphones, reflections, background and more. Due to these factors, our occasions don’t have a steady appearance and feel.

Perhaps we need to reevaluate how we&#8217, re doing life events in higher physician, and not just during a pandemic. Let&#8217, s be fair, this won&#8217, t change after this pandemic ends or a vaccination is accessible. People will be worried about big gatherings for the near future.

A British rock band called Biffy Clyro performed a live performance this past weekend that truly opened my eyes to new methods to perform live performances.

Before I go much further, I&#8217, m a great Biffy lover. I&#8217, ve seen them four times, I&#8217, ve got all their albums ( many on vinyl. ) Next year, they released their ninth full size album, A Celebration of Endings. Typically, a band may release an album and complete advertising around the world, including live shows. Since just about every life, in-person function is cancelled, it &#8217, s forced musicians to find alternative ways to connect with fans and promote their job.

Biffy Clyro are no different. The band also promoted a life global event where they would be playing their entire new album exist in addition to an sound series that started earlier this summer. Prices started at$ 20 and went up from there. If you included a CD or vinyl purchase with your order, the prices were significantly higher.

Despite being a huge fan, I must confess that I was skeptical at first about the occasion. Given the cost of the stream, which may take less than 90 minutes, I was concerned about the stream’s quality.

What I struggle with is basically putting these ideas into practice. Before you know it, I have a lot of documents, some script, and domain names but no actual websites to speak of. Sometimes I write a little code, different occasions I buy a domain name that would suit my plan. I&#8217, m trying to break that routine.

I worked in higher physician from 1998 to 2016. It was amazing and the best career option I could have made. I met so several awesome coworkers, team members, companions and more across that day. I left and went to the private business for two decades, but it was n&#8217, t a great fit. At that point, I went full-time on my own at my online company, Gas Mark 8. I kept looking for higher ed roles, interviewed for several ( including a few full-day on campus interviews ) but nothing went my way. What can you accomplish &#8212, it happens.

Over the last 6 years since I left higher physician, I&#8217, d seen so many amazing people leave the industry. It started pre-pandemic, the past 3 decades have really been rough on higher learning and there&#8217, s been a massive exodus of skills. There are a lot of reasons for that, and we know many of them ( pay, remote work, career advancement, difficult environments, the big sea change in education, and so on. ) There has been a pretty large brain dump, and that &#8217, s a shame.

I&#8217, m bummed because I love higher physician and it &#8217, s essential. I don&#8217, t know what the future holds for it, but I believe in what its on. One baby is one time away from graduating from college, and the other is one year away from beginning. They ’re working with incredible faculty and staff, and they &#8217 are taking advantage of every opportunity they have. It&#8217, s but important as they get ready to go out into the earth.

In Cleveland, where I live, I created a very fast and ugly job search site that offered references to the HR listing sites of the colleges and universities close to me. I created a straightforward resource out of curiosity for what was available. I shared it with some people on my staff, and added more places like Erie and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It was just for me generally, and had very little in terms of style or functionality. But, I did notice that some schools had RSS feeds, so I added a word in my code to one day create a feature that would display those job postings on the page instead of the page.
