After the heist is over, director Phil Alden Robinson, who co-wrote the script with Lawrence Lasker and Walter Parkes, heads to the next day, where Bishop is closing his bank account and receiving the enormous sum he transferred in cash. In a single, unbroken shot, we watch as Martin accepts the bills, passes a security guard, and travels up a board room where he returns the funds to waiting executives and assesses the institution’s security procedures.

When he tells a teller inquiring about his decision to close his account that he” just doesn’t feel safe” with that bank, he betrays nothing, and he continues to be confident in his appeal when he demands payment before providing further analysis.

However, when the secretary makes a comedic comment about how little money he gets paid, Martin starts to feel shaky, and Redford reveals a drop in confidence in his performance. He opens his mouth in defense, as if he knew a man so handsome and fashionable ought to make a comeback, but he walks away silently, his jaw still sagging.

Redford dismisses Martin’s romantic relationship as awesome and a 90s hacker in that situation. Redford permits him to be a human, not the other way around.

Acting Human

Some people complained that Redford was being asked to play in his beats from his 1970s paranoid films because Sneakers didn’t challenge him. With two decades of experience on him, Redford was even better suited to strike a balance between his charisma and humanity. Reddy’s ability to ground Bishop and his wacky pals made Sneakers stand out even more as the era’s thrillers grew more slick, with big stakes and fancy technology ( Enemy of the State, Mission: Impossible, The Long Kiss Goodnight ), made slickness of the era and rediscoverability, making his slickness make Sneakers stand out even more.

Sneakers keep insisting that Martin is fundamentally a good man against strong forces and that he has remarkable hacking abilities. Redford can also exhibit those admirable qualities. However, Redford manages to keep Martin human throughout the movie by slightly lowering his shoulders when Liz reminds him of how badly his relationship with Liz turned out, and by tightening his jaw as he tries to decide whether his friends will accept a risky job that will clear his record.

Robert Redford was a movie star, remarkably handsome, and enamored of endless charisma, as Sneakers repeatedly demonstrates. However, Sneakers also demonstrates that Redford was a decent actor who could remain a human even when portrayed on screen by pairing him with oddball character actors and having him play a real person in a heightened story.
